Film School without the school... These are my favorite textbooks for those interested in studying the history of film. Absolute must-have: If you could only own one definitive book on narrative film from silent era to present day, look no further than the textbook most film students have lugged around in a backpack: The History of Narrative Film by David A. Cook.  (The link will take you to the fifth edition -- most recent at this writing -- but you can find deals on earlier editions if you search.)   For a superb collection of thoughtful essays by film scholars, take a look at Film Analysis: a Norton Reader, by Jeffrey Geiger.
